Dr. Judy Orton Grissett's Theories and Techniques of Counseling and UNIV 1000 classes attended the "Oh My Gourd! Let's Give Them "Pumpkin" To Talk About: Carving out The Stigma of Mental Health" event. They learned about mental health and psychological disorders. This mental health fair was a collaboration between GSW's College of Nursing ASN and BSN programs.
Dr. Joseph Comeau's (Associate Professor of Sociology,) "I Saw What I Saw" event on the sociology of ghost stories was well attended, including members of the local community. He discussed research into paranormal experiences and recounted spooky stories.
This video is an example of the learning supplements that are being created for Introduction to Sociology. Our sociology faculty - Joseph Comeau, Jamie MacLennan, and Debaleena Ghosh - are collaborating, with each faculty member speaking on different topics. Bod Slenker from Information and Instructional Technology is assisting with video production.
Dr. Joseph Comeau is working with Jamie MacLennan and Debaleena Ghosh on an Affordable Learning Georgia grant. The aim is making high quality video clips that will support the free OpenStax Introduction to Sociology textbook. The lobby area has been turned into a temporary movie studio with the help of Bob Slenker. Our department is actively trying to keep the cost of textbooks down.
President Johnston has asked our students to visualize their graduation with official diploma holders. These psychology seniors are excited that they will soon be graduates.
We welcome back Dr. Judy Orton Grissett as an Associate Professor of Psychology. She is a GSW graduate who has previously served as a faculty member in our department and the Director of Experiential Learning. Dr. Grissett lives in Americus with her husband, Robert Grissett, and four children.

We welcome Dr. Yongwon Cho, our new Assistant Professor of Psychology. He comes to us from the University of California - Irvine. Dr. Cho’s research explores motivational self-regulation processes across the lifespan, such as academic achievement in late adolescence and health management in older adulthood. In his free time, Dr. Cho enjoys DAW music production.

Dr. Huffman (Professor of Psychology) will be retiring at the end of May after 17 years of teaching at GSW. We appreciate his service and offer best wishes for a happy retirement. In this photo, he is reading retirement cards signed by students, faculty, and staff. Ru Story-Huffman will also be retiring soon. Be sure to wish them a happy retirement the next time you see them.
Dr. Joseph Comeau, Associate Professor of Sociology, gave two presentations at professional conferences in one week. The first presentation was about creating Sociology YouTube content at the University System of Georgia Teaching and Learning Conference in Athens, Georgia. The second presentation was at the Southwestern Social Sciences Association conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Comeau's presentation, titled “I try really hard to not believe in this stuff, however, I saw what I saw." Examining responses to self-reported haunt-type phenomena, was based upon interviews with people who have experienced ghost encounters. More than one attendee told Dr. Comeau that it was the most fun they've ever had in a conference session.
Our students did a terrific job at this year's Undergraduate Research Symposium. These research projects represent research efforts done during the spring semester. We are proud of your work!
The Psychology/Sociology Department has received a donation of books from Carlanda Dragoin, wife of the recently deceased former faculty member Bill Dragoin. Dr. Dragoin was an avid reader who had interests in art, evolution, learning, anthropology, and some fiction. These books will be given to interested faculty and students. We thank Carlanda for making this kind donation.
