Ms. Catherine's Retirement

Psych/Soc Club meeting on advisement and registration

The Psychology/Sociology Club will meet on Wednesday, October 21, at 6:00 p.m. in Room 245.  Courtney McDonald and Ellen Cotter will be leading an information/Q&A session about advisement and registration for Psychology, Sociology, and Criminal Justice students.  Students who are thinking of changing majors or declaring a minor/certificate in one of those degree programs are particularly encouraged to come.

Organization meetings on Wednesday (Sept. 23)

The student organization "LIFE: Looking Into Fulfillment Everywhere" (formerly "Active Minds") will be holding a meeting this Wednesday (9/23) at 5:00. This is a general interest meeting. 

The Psychology/Sociology Club will meet on Wednesday, September 23, at 6:00 p.m. (note time change from previous meetings) in Room 245.  They are hosting an information session on internships, with Judy Orton Grissett discussing the requirements, benefits, and application process and at least one if not more speakers from recent internship sites.  All are welcome to come.

Georgia Undergraduate Research in Psychology 2015

Six students attended the Georgia Undergraduate Research in Psychology conference. Hala Gross, Chelsea Hooks, and Megan Dolan gave poster presentations on their research projects.

Alumni news: Lorig becomes a Congressional Fellow

Tyler Lorig, a '77 GSW alum, has been made a Congressional Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He will work with Congress as a science advisor next year.  Tyler's wife Beverley, who is also a GSW psychology graduate, is the interim director of the Center for Work and Service at the Madeline Korbel Albright Institute for Global Affairs at Wellsley College.

Baby shower!

The Psych/Soc Department had a baby shower for two faculty members. Judy Orton Grissett and her husband Robert are expecting a baby in April. Joseph Comeau and his wife Bethany are expecting a baby in June. We wish them the best of luck!

Ingram Thanks Scholarship Donors

McKenna Ingram, who is a freshman psychology major, gave a presentation at the Donor Luncheon on February 12, 2015. She thanked the donors and the foundation members for supporting students.

The student organization Looking Into Fulfillment Everywhere (L.I.F.E., formerly "Active Minds") is hosting a movie night on Thursday (2/19) at 6:30 in the Student Success Center, Room 2410. The movie is "Frankie and Alice".  L.I.F.E. is an organization focused on promoting mental health awareness on GSW campus.

Huffman presents research at NITOP

Chuck Huffman, chair of Psychology and Sociology, presented “Own Race Bias in the History of Psychology?” at the 37th Annual National Institute for the Teaching of Psychology, on Jan. 4th in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.

Grant to Promote Free Textbooks

The Department of Psychology and Sociology has received a grant to promote the use of free textbooks in Introductory Psychology and Introductory Sociology classes. The key goal is to lower the cost of college while maintaining high educational standards. The grant, which is from Affordable Learning Georgia, was awarded to Chuck Huffman. A short story about the grant was also aired on WALB news.
