Psy/Soc Club Meeting on Wednesday, November 20
The Psychology/Sociology Club will meet on Wednesday,
November 20, at 5:00 in Room 245. Our guest speaker will be our own Dr.
Jamie MacLennan, who will be discussing his Appalachian Trail research and his
various interests within the discipline of sociology. We will also be
taking nominations for officer positions to replace some of our officers who
are graduating in December. All are welcome.

Psy/Soc Club Trivia Night on Friday, November 8
The Psychology/Sociology Club is hosting a Trivia Night on
Friday, November 8, at 6:00 p.m. in Room 235 of the Psychology/Sociology
Building. The questions will not be limited to Psychology and Sociology,
so anyone can play regardless of their familiarity with those fields. We
will have prizes and possibly refreshments in the second floor lobby.
Everyone is welcome to come.

1) Finalize our plans for the Weekend Initiative activity we’re hosting on Friday, November 8.
2) Discuss Preview Day, which is Saturday, November 9.
3) Continue the discussion of T-shirts. Bring your ideas!
4) Determine what we want to do at our next meeting, which will be Wednesday, November 20. This will probably be our last meeting of the semester.
5) Collect dues ($5).

Capitan Plaza Dedication
Capitan Plaza, which is the garden area and space between the two buildings in the Health and Human Sciences Complex, was officially dedicated today. This area is named after William Capitan, who was the President of Georgia Southwestern State University from 1979 to 1995. President Capitan helped start the Rosalynn Carter Institute. He also began the planning for the current Health and Human Sciences Complex in the 1990s.

New Faculty Members
The Psychology/Sociology Department welcomes two new faculty members to our department.
Judy Orton is an Educational Psychologist who recently received her Ph.D. from Georgia State. She will be teaching Introductory Psychology, Abnormal, and Counseling this fall.
Joseph Comeau is a Sociologist who comes to us from the University of North Texas. He will be teaching Introductory Sociology, Family, and Development of Social Theory.

Building flooded
A hot water pipe broke in our building over the weekend. Much of the building has about an inch or two of water on the floor. The clean-up effort has already started. The building will be closed to students during the clean-up effort.

Document camera for the computer lab
This new Elmo system captures video and displays small objects. It will be used in the statistics class to display the use of graphing calculators. We thank the Office of Academic Affairs and the Faculty Affairs Committee for supporting this teaching innovation.

New building ribbon cutting ceremony
On May 2, an official dedication of the Health and Human Sciences Phase II building was held. Rosalynn Carter, Jimmy Carter, and other members of the Carter family were present, as well as local politicians and members from the Board of Regents. After the ribbon cutting a statue of Rosalynn Carter was unveiled. It was a very special occasion that marked an important step forward for the Psychology/Sociology Department, the Rosalynn Carter Caregiving Institute, and Georgia Southwestern.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on May 2
The official dedication of our new building will be held on Thursday, May 2. A statue of Rosalynn Carter will also be unveiled.
From the press release: "Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will hold its second and final ribbon cutting Thursday, May 2 at 5 p.m. for the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex. Celebrating the completion of the Complex’s second building, the event will be highlighted by the unveiling of a statue featuring GSW alumna and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. The former first lady and former President Jimmy Carter will be in attendance."

History and Systems Class Poster Presentations
