Graduate Study at Western Kentucky University

Western Kentucky University has a newly revised M.A. program in Psychological Science (formerly Experimental Psychology). This is a two-year, 36-hour graduate program that will help students acquire the quantitative and methodological skills they will need to successfully compete for entry into a Ph.D. program in
Psychology. It also serves students who are looking for research experience and training they can use in jobs that require quantitative and methodological skills beyond the undergraduate level.

The program offers research opportunities in a number of areas including cognition, perception, child development, aging, social psychology, emotion, sports psychology, and educational psychology. While in the program, students work closely with faculty on their master’s theses. They also complete course work to advance their quantitative and methodological skills, to bolster their background knowledge in the core areas of psychological science, and to foster their professional development. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to develop their speaking and writing skills, and many collaborate with faculty on peer-reviewed publications and
conference presentations. Finally, most students receive financial support through assistantships and tuition waivers.

Alliance Meeting

The Alliance is a GSW student organization dedicated to awareness, education, and acceptance of all those in support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. This includes people who consider themselves "straight allies", people who do not identify as LBGT but who support their friends, family, and fellow students who do.

This semester's first meeting of the Alliance will be on Tuesday, January 17, at 7:00 p.m. in Room 4 of the Psychology/Sociology Building. All are welcome to come.

Writing Center Open

The Writing Center is located in Room 107 of the English Building. The goal of the Writing Center is to help students through all stages of the writing process, from idea generation through citation. They are not there to proofread your paper, but can help you develop your topic and figure out the best way to express your ideas.

If you think the Writing Center can help you with your papers for your classes, please go check them out. They are open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Graduate studies in Clinical Medical Psychology at Mercer University

Mercer University is offering a new PhD program in Clinical Medical Psychology. According to their literature, "the program is designed to train students in the application of clinical and research skills in an integrative, biopsychosocial approach to healthcare" and offers three areas of concentration: adult health psychology, pediatric psychology, or neuropsychology/geropsychology. This is an ideal area of study for students who are interested in working with clients with medical issues but who do not want to go to medical or nursing school.

Summer research opportunity

Oklahoma State University is pleased to announce that they will be holding their summer research experience for undergraduates again in summer 2012. The goal of this program is to provide 12 undergraduate students with an in-depth, hands-on research experience focused on the biological basis of animal and human behavior. Students will be trained in the application of the scientific method to develop hypotheses, design and conduct research studies involving either animal or human subjects. Students will also be trained in the responsible conduct of research. Students will be mentored by full-time, Ph.D.-level faculty members who are tenured/tenure-track faculty with strong programs of research. Students selected for the program will be expected to devote at least 40 hours a week for research; thus, it is not possible to be enrolled in courses or other activities during the program.

Program dates: June 2, 2012-July 29, 2012
Application deadline: February 1, 2012

To be eligible, students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate program. Students must be returning seniors, not receiving their bachelor’s degree before December 2012. Each student will reside in a campus dormitory (at no cost to the student) and receive $500 per week to cover food and other living expenses. Students will receive a $500 travel stipend to pay for their travel to and from campus and a $500 additional stipend, if students present research at an academic conference.

If you are graduating on that date and want to order a cap and gown, the deadline for doing so is Sunday, November 13. Writing Center opens Monday, September 12

The University Writing Center will open on Monday, September 12. It is located in Room 107 of the English Building. The operating hours are:

9 am to 7 pm Mondays through Thursdays
9 am to 3 pm on Fridays

The director of the Writing Center, Dr. Lauren DiPaula, says: "Please encourage your students to come see us at any time and at any phase of their writing. Please also tell them to bring a description of the assignment they are completing so that the tutors can appropriately assist them."

The main focus of the Writing Center is to help students with issues such as topic development and organization. Proofreading is NOT traditionally a main focus of the Writing Center.

Creative work sought for Sirocco

Sirocco is GSW's literary and arts magazine, published every spring. In addition to written and visual arts, musical submissions are also encouraged for inclusion on a companion CD. The theme of the 2012 edition is “Open the Doors of Perception.” Submissions of creative works in written, musical, and visual arts are sought for possible publication. The deadline this year is December 5, 2011. If you are interested in submitting works of written and/or visual arts, please contact Dr. Genie Bryan in the Department of English and Modern Languages. College and University Counseling
For students who desire to work in a community college, four-year college, or university settings. Students will gain experiences offering mental health counseling to clients in a higher education setting presenting with a variety of clinical issues. Additional experiences will include group counseling, assessment, and outreach to the college community.

Community Mental Health Counseling
For students who desire to work in a community mental health settings or outpatient hospital settings. Students will gain experiences offering mental health counseling to clients from a variety of age groups and presenting with a variety of clinical issues. Additional experiences may include group counseling, assessment, and family counseling.

Doctoral Preparatory Counseling
For students who are interested in obtaining a master’s degree that will prepare them for a doctoral program. Students will gain experiences (e.g., doctoral application strategies, applied counseling and psychotherapy research, etc.) aimed to facilitate their acceptance to a doctoral program in professional psychology.

Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling For students who are interested in gaining experiences in counseling settings that offer traditional (e.g., individual mental health counseling) and nontraditional counseling services (e.g., homeless shelter, domestic violence shelter, group home). In addition, students in this specialization track are more likely to aspire to work for a nonprofit agency.

School Counseling
For students who desire to work in a K-12 school setting. Students will gain experiences that include individual counseling, group and educational counseling, career and college counseling, teacher consultation, and prevention programming. The completion of this specialization will also result in eligibility to receive a Pupil Personnel Services Credential for the State of California. This program is approved by the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

The Georgia Undergraduate Research in Psychology Conference

Twelve members of the Psychology/Sociology Club went to Kennesaw State University on April 2 for the Georgia Undergraduate research in Psychology Conference. The students who attended were Adam Coffey, Jay Chafin, Jordan McDuffie, Ambrica Johnson, Megan Walker, Maria Trinh, William 'Zac' Lewis, Denise McKay, Elizabeth Moss, Kirby Salter, Trudy Hall, and Beth Brooks.

Jay Chafin presented his research results from an unconscious perception study at a poster session.

Adam Coffey presented his research on the accuracy of eyewitness testimony in a paper presentation.

Adam's presentation won third prize out of 18 presentations. Congratulations Adam!

Our own departmental members Courtney McDonald, Tom Johnson, and Andrea Miller will be leading the discussion along with some friends. Please come join us if you're able.

Also, on Monday, March 14 we will meet again, this time at 7:30 p.m. in Room 3 (this time the meeting location is the same as usual, but the time is different). Dr. Carrah James will be talking about her experiences in graduate school at UGA. Dr. James received her bachelor's degree in Psychology from GSW in 2003 and so can offer a perspective similar to what our students have. Please come join us for that too!

Summer opportunity for students

Davidson-Broughton Summer Program - May 31 to July 22, 2011

Davidson College sponsors an eight-week summer academic program for undergraduates at Broughton Hospital in Morganton, N.C., a state psychiatric facility serving western North Carolina. The program is an internship in clinical settings at the Hospital; students earn credit for one course from Davidson College as Practicum in Psychology (PSY 290). This course is taught by the Staff Psychologist at Broughton Hospital who is an adjunct faculty member at Davidson College. Besides working in the hospital, students have periodic discussion sessions with the faculty member and attend a weekly seminar with presentations by clinical staff at the Hospital. Because these times are arranged once the class arrives in Morganton, students should plan on being on site five days a week for the duration of the program. The program will run from May 31 to July 22, 2011.

Participants work with hospital professionals as observers and assistants in patient treatment programs. Students may have the opportunity to participate in other hospital trainings and/or field trips to settings where activities relevant to clinical psychology are occurring. Service to the hospital is an important aspect of all placement options. Expected rotations include: Adult Services, Acute and Adult Services, Long-Term; Specialty Services, Adolescent, Specialty Services, Geropsychiatry; and Specialty Services, Deaf Services.

Program size is 8 students. The number of applications for the program has progressively increased over the last several years. Criteria for admission, therefore, are driven in part by the number of applicants and can become competitive. Applications from students enrolled at Davidson College will receive some preferential weighting. Applicants should have completed Abnormal Psychology prior to the program's start.

Tuition and room fees total $800. No financial aid from Davidson College is available.

Mercer University's College of Continuing and Professional Studies offers several graduate degrees in counseling and counselor education. Mercer's Office of Admissions has scheduled several information sessions for prospective students. The sessions will be held on the following dates:

Professional Development conference

If you're considering going to graduate school to study child development or family science (including fields of study such as Sociology, Psychology, and Education), you may want to look into Arizona State University's "Professional Development Conference for Undergraduates Interested in Graduate Training in Family and Child Sciences". This is an opportunity to learn about the field of child development and family science as well as receive information about the graduate school application process and develop a network of contacts of other students and faculty members in this area. This conference is specifically aimed at students who will be seniors in the Fall 2011 semester and are planning to enter a research-based doctoral program in some aspect of child development or family studies after graduation.

Students who are selected to attend this conference will have their travel and lodging expenses paid for by the program. This is pretty cool.

Summer Research Opportunity

The National Science Foundation is funding a summer research program for 2011 at Oklahoma State University. The focus of the program is on the biological basis of behavior (both human and animal). Participating students will live in dorms and get a stipend of $500 per week for eight weeks. This is an amazing opportunity to get high-quality hands-on research experience, especially for students who are interested in pursuing graduate study in this field.

General Information

The Fall Graduation for Georgia Southwestern State University will be held Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in Convocation Hall of the Student Success Center. There will be no rehearsal. In order to ensure that you are in the correct place and that you have all necessary instructions, please report to the Intramural Gym located in the Student Success Center no later than 10:15 a.m. on December 11. Be sure to have your cap and gown with you when you arrive. Do not bring anything else with you purse, coat, camera, etc. The Intramural Gym will not be secure after you leave for the ceremony.

A Graduation Breakfast has been planned for all graduates, prior to the ceremony at 8:15 a.m. in the Dining Hall. Honor graduates and other recognitions will be presented at this time. This event is a very special time to visit with faculty and fellow students for the last time before you move on in your career or to graduate school. Space will allow for graduates only at this occasion.

All candidates for graduation are expected to participate in the graduation exercises. If you are unable to participate and have not officially notified the Registrar of this, please contact that office immediately at 229.928.1331 or email Ms. Lois Oliver. Physically challenged candidates should immediately notify Ms. Oliver of desired special accommodations.

Ordering Your Cap and Gown

All students who plan to march must wear the appropriate GSW cap and gown for the ceremony. Go to this page to order yours. The deadline for ordering is November 15.

Tickets for Guests Attending the Graduation Ceremony

Guest tickets will be mailed to only those students who have indicated they will be marching at the graduation ceremony on December 11. If you have changed your mind about attending or not attending the ceremony, email Ms. Lois Oliver or call her at 229-928-1331 by Friday, November 12, 2010. Tickets will be mailed out by November 19, 2010. The number of tickets issued per students depends on the number of graduation students marching. That number will be determined by November 15, 2010 and emailed to you.

Library Display for Mental Illness Awareness Week

The Psychology/Sociology Club organized a display in the library for Mental Illness Awareness week (Oct. 3-9). The National Alliance on Mental Illness estimates that one out of every four adults experiences a mental health problem in any given year, and that approximately 6% of the United States population lives with serious and/or chronic disorders. Unfortunately, less than one-third of adults receive proper diagnosis and treatment, resulting in reduced life expectancy and other problems such as homelessness, incarceration, and higher health care costs. This display represents an opportunity to learn more about mental illness and reduce the stigma associated with it.

Sleep Clinic Tour

The Psychology/Sociology Club visited the Sleep Center of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. The students watched patients being monitored for evidence of sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. The technicians explained how the monitoring equipment works. The students also saw continuous positive airway pressure devices that are used to treat people with sleep apnea.

As you certainly know by now, Mr. David Ralston, the Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives will be on campus this Wednesday, September 29. He will be speaking in Jackson Hall at 11:00 that morning. At the risk of pushing this a bit harder than necessary, I want to encourage you and your students to attend. Speaker Ralston was instrumental in our receiving the funding for Phase I of our Health and Human Sciences Complex this year and will be key to our receiving the money for Phase II next year. I want the Speaker to know that we appreciate his support. Having a large crowd for his presentation is important to sending that message. Thank you for your help on this.

The schedules of summer and fall classes are up on the GSW website, at this link. Note that when registration starts on March 29, you can register for both summer and fall classes. Although there are several summer terms, you can take classes in any of them as long as the times don't overlap.

If you're interested in doing an internship, please read the information on the Psychology/Sociology Department website about the procedures for finding and registering for an internship. Please be aware that you can register for 3, 6, or 9 credits of internship, but that you will need to put in 7 hours per week for every 3 internship credit hours if your internship is in the fall, and 14 hours per week for every 3 credits in the summer. Also, if you are planning on doing an internship in the summer, you must register for it by the end of the pre-registration period (April 16).

Bookstore information

The campus bookstore has sent out a request asking faculty and staff to tell their students to bring printouts of their class schedules with them when they come to the bookstore to buy books. The bookstore explains the rationale really well:

"This is the only way the Bookstore Staff can make absolutely sure the correct textbooks are selected. Some students think that telling us it is the red book with the stripe on it or it is the class that is taught by the tall man with the beard is enough for the Bookstore to help them find their book."

Another issue not mentioned is that there might be several sections of a class (e.g., PSYC 1101) taught by different instructors who use different books. If you don't know exactly which section you're in, you might buy the wrong book.

You see the problem here. Take your schedule to the bookstore.

Registration for Summer and Fall 2009 classes will begin on Monday, March 30. Only graduating seniors can register that day; everyone else's registration dates begin later. Please check your account on RAIN to see the first dates on which you can register. In general, though, the first day of registration is based on the number of credit hours you have completed (which does not include what you're taking this semester):

The Psychology/Sociology Club will meet on Wednesday, March 18, at 11:00 a.m. in Room 3 of the Psychology/Sociology building. We will discuss plans for playing bingo at Magnolia Manor next week and going to the conference at Fort Valley State University in April. All are welcome.

Registration and the Regents Test

Registration for Summer and Fall classes will begin on Monday, March 30. Please check your record on RAIN to make sure that you don't have any holds prior to registration. If you see something called an "Advisor Hold", that means you have to meet with your advisor prior to registration. You will most likely have an Advisor Hold if you:

Have applied to graduate in spring 2009
Have between 85-105 overall earned hours
Have less than 30 overall earned hours

There may be other reasons too, but these are the most common ones.

The ONLY hold your advisor can take care of is the Advisor Hold. If you have a hold due to unpaid parking tickets, Health Center fees, missing vaccinations, or something else, you need to resolve that either through Public Safety, the Health Center, or the Cashier's Office.

Also, if you have not yet passed the Regents Test and need to sign up to take it this semester, you need to register to take it by March 11. You can register online through RAIN. If you click on the link in RAIN for viewing your academic transcript you can see which parts of the Regents Test you need to take.

The Board of Regents requires students to begin testing their first term at GSW, and they only get two attempts to pass the tests before the students are required to enroll in remedial skills classes. However, if the student misses the tests then that is considered an attempt. Please sign up for the Regents Test (and show up to take them!) as soon as possible to reduce your chances of having to take the remedial skills classes.

Psychology/Sociology Club Meeting

The Psychology/Sociology Club will meet on Wednesday, March 4, at 11:00 a.m. in Room 3. We will talk more about our plans to go to the colloquium at Fort Valley State University. We will also elect a new Treasurer. If you are interested in holding this office, please come to the meeting and be prepared to talk for a couple of minutes about why you're interested in this position and why you think you'd be good at it. If you have questions about what the Treasurer does, please let me know.

Also at this meeting, Dr. Laura DePaola, a clinical psychologist here in town, will be our guest speaker. She will be talking about graduate school preparation as well as giving some information about the life of a practicing clinical psychologist. Dr. DePaola's presentation will start at 11:30.

Writing Center

The following information comes from Dr. Brian Adler, Vice President for Academic Affairs:

The GSW Writing Center, located in Room 107 of the English Building, will be open this semester during the following hours:

Monday through Thursday 10 am - 7 pm
Friday 10 am - 2 pm

Beginning this semester, the Writing Center will be under the direction of Lydia Rogers, assistant professor of English. Tutors from various disciplines will be available to help students in any class. The emphasis of this tutorial work will fall on the writing process, with special attention to helping students get started with assignments, helping them imagine ways to develop content and structure for their writing, and with strategies for more effective editing and proofreading. Please remember that tutors do not "fix" student writing; instead, they provide support for writers as they move toward completion of a project. PLEASE NOTE: THE WRITING CENTER IS OPEN TO ALL GSW STUDENTS who are engaged in writing projects.
